Follow Me.  Luke 5:27-29

Luke 5:27-29 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." 28 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him. 29 Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them.

1.      We will looked at 3 things that happened in this passage, What are they?

1.      The Call

2.      The Response.

3.      The Result,

2.      Q > We are all followers, What are some of the things we tend to follow?

1.      Money, fame, possessions, sports, entertainment, flesh, eye candy, pride etc..

The Call.

3.      Q > When Jesus called us to follow Him; what impact should that have on our Lives?

R > Matt 16:24-25 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me (Follow), let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

1.      Center of focus goes from self focus to Christ focused.

2.      Sacrifice our live for Christ. (In Christísí day "Take up your cross" was also a battle cry for certain of the Zealots as they sacrificed themselves in the battle to overcome Rome.)

3.      Totally give our lives over for the sake of Christ.

R > Luke 18:29-30 So He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life."

The Response.

1.      Q > What can we learn from Leviís response to Jesus Request to Follow Him.

1)      Are response should be immediate.

                                                        i.      Delayed obedience is disobedience.

R > Luke 5:28 So he left all, rose up, and followed Him.

R > Luke 9:59-60 Then He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father." 60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God."

ii.      Jesus would not ask us to do something now, that He wants us to do later.

R > Matt 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest."

2)      We should not abandon our responsibilities; just place our live under new leadership.

R > 29 Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them.

3)      Exchange our world directed life for a Christ directed life.

R > Luke 16:12-13 No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

4)      Make your response to Jesus Permanente.

R > Luke 9:61-62 But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

The Results.

1.      Q > What are the results of Following Jesus?

1)      Freed from things that hold us in Bondage.

R >  2 Cor 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2)      The promise that all of your needs will be met and Eternal life.

R > Luke 18:29-30o He said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life."

3)      A new life and a new focus in life. (Focus is reconciling the world to God.)

R > 2 Cor 5:17-19 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.."
