The Christian life.  2 Peter 1:5-11

2 Peter 1:5-11 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; 11 for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

How to avoid the pitfalls of False Prophets.

Last weeks study;

1.      We have all the power we need to live Holy lives.

2.      Jesus is the greatest example for us to live a holy life.

3.      Jesus should be our highest motivation for living Holy lives.

4.      We have the power to live a life free of the world’s corruption.

This weeks study;

5.      The ability to grow in our Holiness. V3 -4 Is the reason we can live Holy lives.

6.      The 7 virtues we should diligently seek to perfect our Christians walk.

1)       Virtue = Moral excellence or the excellence of character.

a)      If Christ is our example of Holiness there will always be a reason to grow excellence of Character.

2)       Knowledge > we gain Knowledge as we read the Bible.

a)      The absolute fool proof way to know if Gods word is truth comes through Obedience to It.

R > John 7:17 If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.

3)   Self-Control = Greatness always come through self-control.

a)      Mastering sinful desires rather than being controlled by them.

b)      We have Self-Control when we desire Godliness more that sinful worldly emotions.

c)   The Holy Spirit gives us the power to have self control.

d)      Our sinful emotions take us somewhere that God does not want to take us.

R > 1 Cor 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

4) Perseverance = Steadfast endurance, a steadfast walk with the Lord.

a)      Other people or things never affect our relationship with the Lord when we have Perseverance.

5)       Godliness = A devout and reverence towards God.

a)      I care more about what God thinks of me the other people think of me.

6)       Brotherly kindness = A Growing in affection for our Christians family

a)      There is a price to pay for walking the Christian life and we need each other to endure.

7)       Love = agape, the anyway love, totally unconditional and undeserved Love.

a)      This love comes only from God. We are to emulate God.

7.      Q > What are the reason we should live these 7 virtues out in our lives?

1)       V-8, Spiritual growth in these areas is the only way to come to a full and correct Knowledge of Jesus.

R > John 14:20-21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."

2)       V-9, It is the only way to see Gods Big Picture.

3)       V-10 Spiritual Growth is the evidence that our salvation is true.

R > James 2:18-20 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

R> 1 John 2:3-4 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

R> Matt 7:15-21 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

R> Matt 7:22-23 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' 23 And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'

4)       V-10 protects us from stumbling.

5)       V-11 It assures us an entrance into heaven.
