Living for the Eternal in a Temporal World.  2 Peter 3:10-16

2 Peter 3:10-16 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation--as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

A. What power hold the creation together and how will it all end?

1.     Jesus holds everything together.

                                                                                i.   R > Col 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

2.     When Jesus wants everything to end, it will all come apart.

1.      All the atoms in this universe are held together by Jesus.

2.      When Jesus stops holding them together there will be a great explosion and everything will end in a great fire.

                                                                              i.      R > 2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

B. How should we live are lives knowing Jesus will end it all.

1.     Q > living for self will end in regret. Why?

                                                                                i.      Everything we do for self will be destroyed.

R > 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

2.     Q > we should not live our lives for the material world.  Why?

                                                                                i.      We are an eternal creation, the thing of the world will be destroyed they do not Satisfy.

1.      If the world is all we have when we die, we have no place to live that meets out needs.

2.      If we treasure only things that will be destroyed, we will have no eternal rewards.

R > Matthew 6:19-21 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

3.     Q > why should we be looking forward to the return of Jesus. Why?

                                                                                i.      This world is not home to us. It does not meet our needs.

1.      Our needs are spiritual and eternal not physical and temporal.

2.      The world seeks to have stuff, we seek to be righteous.

2 Peter 3:12-13 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

4.     Q > we should desire to hasten the day of Jesus’ return. How?

                                                                                i.      With Prayer, (Matthew 6:10"Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,").

ii.      Witnessing, (Matthew 24:14 This gospel of the kingdom must be preached to all the nations, and then shall the end come, says the Lord Jesus)

iii.      Obedience, (2 Peter 3:14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless;)

Conclusion: R > 2 Timothy 4:1-2 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
