|2 Peter 3:1-9|
2 Peter 3:1-9 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
What are the two things that Peter reminds us of in this passage?
1. Jesus’ return at His second coming and the judgment to come upon the earth
a. Q > Who brought this message to us? V:1
i. The old testament prophets.
ii. The apostles. V:2
b. Q > What will some people make light of, just before Jesus returns at His second coming?
i. They will say God has not kept His promise. V 3-4
1. Jesus is not coming back.
2. Things will just go on as they always have.
3. There is no God only the laws of nature.
ii.They will do this because of their lust, with the intent of filling their lustful desires through the pleasers of this world.
1. They are in denial that God will do as He sead he will do.
2. They can live however they want because there is no end coming.
3. They deny that this world will end through fire.
4. They deny that Jesus will rain for 1,000 years in the millennium time.
2. Q > What are these scoffers willfully ignoring? V:5-6
a. That some one created all of the laws of nature. Everything we see has a creator.
i. They deny this fact because to accept it they would have to give up their sinful lusts.
b. They must deny in their foolishness, that everything we see has a creator that creator it.
i. Creation always speaks of a designer and a creator. To reject this fact is complete foolishness and totally illogical.
c. They deny that a Judgment is coming by overlooking the Judgment God brought at the time of Noah’s flood.
i. R > Matt 24:35-39 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. 36 "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away.
3. Q > What do we as Christians need to remember in the face of this kind of scoffing? V:7-9
a. The coming Judgment is sure.
i. In Noah’s day the whole world was wrong, only 8 people had it right.
ii. It does not matter what other people say or think.
b. Jesus holds everything together.
i. R > Col 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
ii. When Jesus wants everything to end, it will all come apart.
1. All the atoms in this universe are held together by Jesus. (The atomic glue I Jesus)
2. When Jesus stops holding them together there will be a great explosion and everything will end in a great fire.
iii. R > 2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
c. Jesus’ return is sure.
i. R > Psalms 90:4 For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it is past,
ii. He does not operate in time like we do.
d. To God time is not as important as the salvation of the lost souls on earth.
e. God delay is because of His Great love for everyone.
Conclusion: R > 2 Corinthians 6:2: And in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.
