Christians; the mirrored image of Christ  2 Corinthians 3:7-18

2 Corinthians 3:7-18 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious. 12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech-- 13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Reference Passage: Exodus 34:29-35 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses' hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him. 30 So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them as commandments all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. 34 But whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded. 35 And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.d

How does the ministry of death compare to the ministry of the Spirit?

1.      Compare the Glory revealed in the Law (Ministry of death), to the Glory reviled through the Spirit. (Ministry of Life). 2 Cor 3:7- 11

a.      Q > In what way was there Glory in the delivery of the Law?

                                                                                i.      It revealed the nature of God to Man.

ii.      It provided direction to fallen mankind.

1.      R > Gal 3:24-25 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

b.      Q > In what way is there much more Glory in the delivery of the Spirit?

                                                                                i.      The Law came with condemnation the Spirit comes with Liberty.

1.      R > 2 Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

ii.      The Law could only purify the flesh, the Spirit cleanse our conscience so we can serve God.

1.      R > Heb 9:13-14 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

2.      Q > How does this ministry of the Spirit effect our individual lives today.

a.      We have Great Boldness of Speech.

                                                      i.      R > 2 Cor 12, Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech.

b.      Moses message was a fading message, where our message is an eternal message, of Grace and Truth.

                                                       i.      R > John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

c.       Moses message put veil on the minds and hearts of the hearer, our message of Christ removes that veil from those that accept Jesus.

                                                                                 i.      R > 2 Cor 14, But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

d.      Moses message had a fading Glory resulting in a life of bondage; our message of Christ has an unfading Glory resulting in liberty.

                                                                                 i.      R > 2 Cor 16-17, 16 Nevertheless when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

e.       Moses message hid the Glory behind his veil; our message of Christ with unveiled faces, mirrors the Glory of Jesus, (as He transforms us into His Glory) to those who look at us.

                                                                                 i.      R > 2 Cor 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Conclusion: Those of us, who are in Christ Jesus, mirror the Image and Glory of God with unveiled faces, to those whose faces are veiled. Therefore "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matt 5:13-16
